In Quebec, we have medical specialists throughout the province. In this section, as well as on each page describing the FMSQ's affiliated medical associations, you will find some statistics regarding the distribution of specialized medical manpower such as geographic distribution, age and gender division.
The data presented in this section is compiled on a regular basis and updated every night. They are thus the most recent figures we have at our disposal. They only take into account physicians who are actively practising (within the context of Quebec's health insurance system) and who have at least one principal practice in a hospital centre or in a private office, according to our internal database on medical manpower management. At the time we prepared these statistics, several physicians were not active for various reasons: leave to pursue subspecialty studies (fellowship); leave to carry on teaching, administration or fundamental research activities; maternity or paternity leave; retirement; etc.
The data is frequently updated by the FMSQ's affiliated medical associations. However, disparities may exist between the information collated and managed by the FMSQ and that of the Collège des médecins, the department of health and social services (MSSS), the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec, the Canadian Institute for Health Information and other databases or information sources. It is also possible for the overall statistics to be inexact because of incomplete information on a physician's record. For example, if a physician has not provided a date of birth, the age field in the database will contain a 0. This will have an impact on the overall average age, for his or her specialty as well as for medical specialists as a whole.
In Quebec, 60 medical specialties are recognized by the Collège des médecins du Québec. As of now, 59 of these medical specialties are represented at the FMSQ by 35 affiliated medical associations. The FMSQ does not represent general practitioners whose field of activity was recognized as the 60th medical specialty.
