A 4th Mandate for Dr Gaétan Barrette as President of the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec

Montreal, March 22, 2013 – During the annual Delegates' Assembly, Dr Gaétan Barrette was elected without opposition as President of the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ). Initially taking on this position in November 2006, Dr Barrette, a radiologist, thus begins his fourth mandate.

Reiterating their confidence in Dr Barrette, the Delegates made clear their intention to continue to express themselves on all matters that touch specialized medicine in Quebec and to act in such a way as to ensure their positions are known and understood by the population receiving care.

Under Dr Barrette's guidance, the FMSQ has increasingly taken position on issues dealing with health. "Medical specialists want to be heard when the stakes involve our public health system and my responsibility is specifically to represent them in any area where our expertise makes a difference. I am happy to be able to continue, in the name of our members, to present our ideas and to defend our stands, especially when the conditions of practice of specialized medicine are concerned so as to ensure better access to healthcare."

The Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec represents more than 9000 medical specialists certified in one of the 53 recognized medical specialties.
