$20 Million for 22,450 Additional Surgeries : A Big Contract for the Minister !
Montreal, November 28, 2016 – "We have been saying for the longest time that surgeons want to be able to operate on more patients, so we're not now going to complain about the opening of additional operating theatres. It's just that the Minister's numbers seem overly optimistic," said Dr Diane Francœur, President of the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ).
How will it be possible to perform 22,450 additional surgeries with a budget of $20 million or some $890 per case ? According to the MSSS's own numbers, as provided within the framework of the annual analysis of budgetary credits, the average cost of one hour's presence in the operating suite amounted to $1,373 in 2015-2016.
"We just have to hope that the Minister can correct all the failures experienced on a daily basis in operating theatres that we've been deploring for years. Otherwise, the Minister's announcement will have been only an early Christmas present... or perhaps an early election present ! When can we expect another announcement to the effect that waiting times for cancer surgery will be respected ?" concluded Dr Francœur.
The Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec represents more than 10,000 medical specialists certified in one of 59 recognized medical specialties.
