The FMSQ's Initial Reaction to Bill 130 : Gaétan Barrette Has Gone Too Far !
Montreal, December 9, 2016 — "Medical specialists are not the source of the healthcare system's problems. The source is Gaétan Barrette himself !" This was the initial reaction of the President of the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ), Dr Diane Francœur, following the tabling of Bill 130, An Act to amend certain provisions regarding the clinical organization and management of health and social service institutions.
True to his way of doing things since he took office, Gaétan Barrette has chosen the method of unilaterally imposing legislation rather than resorting to dialog and cooperation. "Instead of working with us, he has chosen once again to use his billy club. Worse still, just like the other laws he has had adopted up to now, Bill 130 is Gaétan Barrette's new weapon to settle his score with former colleagues," added the President.
Gaétan Barrette claims loud and clear that his actions have all been taken in the interests of citizens, but adds in the same breath that he's running an election campaign. That is what motivates his surprise announcements, confronting everyone with a done deal. He accuses opposition parties of being opportunistic manipulators. Look who's talking !
The Federation will analyze the contents of this Bill and provide a reaction at the appropriate time. "One thing is certain, contending that physicians are lazy, spoiled children and irresponsible is unacceptable. Stating that physicians have no obligations towards hospitals is pure demagoguery. No, Gaétan Barrette will not be receiving the professional independence of physicians as a Christmas present," concluded Dr Francœur.
The Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec represents more than 10,000 medical specialists certified in one of 59 recognized medical specialties.
