This section gives some statistics on the distribution of medical specialists geographically and by gender, as well as their age.

The data in this section were compiled as of September 20, 2011 and refer only to those physicians in active practice (under the Quebec health insurance plan), having at least one practice address (either hospital or office) who are included in our internal medical staff management data base. At the time the statistics were prepared, many specialists were not in active practice for a number of reasons: fellowship commitments, teaching or fundamental research activities, retirement, etc.

These data are frequently updated by the FMSQ and its affiliated associations. However, the information gathered and managed by the FMSQ may differ from that of the Collège des médecins, the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux, the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec, the Canadian Institute for Health Information, and other data bases or sources of information.
