Psychiatry

Psychiatrists are the only physicians who specialize in the assessment and management of mental illness in children, adults and the elderly, whether physical, psychological or social in nature. Among other things, they look after patients suffering from anxiety problems, depression, bipolar disorders, psychoses, personality problems, as well as psychosomatic illnesses and addiction.

Although a number of professionals look after mental health problems, psychiatrists are the only ones to provide a diagnosis and full treatment. They are medical specialists and are generally consulted following referral from another health professional. Psychiatrists may have office practices but they are generally found in hospitals where they may work as part of a multidisciplinary team, in cooperation with nurses, psychologists and social workers.
