Hematology and Medical OncologyHematology is the science that relates to the different elements that make up the blood and also the organs responsible for producing it. Oncology relates to the various forms of cancer and their management. Most specialists practising these disciplines in Quebec are both hematologists and oncologists, because of the cross-over necessary with regard to certain diagnoses. Some of hematologists’ prime areas of concern are as follows: coagulation problems (different types of hemophilia and thrombosis problems [excessive formation of blood clots]; anemia (decrease in the red cells that carry oxygen in the blood); qualitative or quantitative disorders of white blood cells (leukemia, immunodeficiency including AIDS, etc.); platelet disorders (increased risk of bleeding or thrombosis); lymph node, spleen or liver dysfunction (such as lymphoma); and a whole range of treatments for lung, breast or liver cancer, etc.). Hematologists/oncologists order the laboratory tests required to confirm the disease in question. The treatments available include blood exchange, transfusion and chemotherapy. In view of the complexity of the problems encountered in their practice, hematologists/oncologists consider their patients’ overall needs, often as part of a large multidisciplinary team. In addition to the direct care of their own patients, these specialists are at the heart of hospital life, ensuring the quality of a whole host of laboratory services (blood tests, coagulation tests, transfusions) required by patients in general.
