It therefore deals with the diagnosis and treatment of problems of the endocrine glands and also metabolic disorders. The specialty treats conditions involving the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, the thyroid, parathyroids, pancreas, adrenal glands and gonads (testicles and ovaries). Endocrinologists also specialize in disorders affecting the metabolism of lipids, carbohydrates and the bones. Retarded growth and problems that occur during puberty also form part of this field.
