General Surgery

General surgery covers surgical specialists who practise in widely diversified fields. They deal with pathologies requiring surgery of the skin and soft tissues, some diseases of the head and neck, the endocrine glands, thorax, all abdominal organs (oesophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, gall bladder, bile ducts, pancreas and spleen), the arteries and veins. General surgeons provide first-line treatment to patients with multiple trauma, and severe surgical cases in the emergency room and intensive care unit. They act as resource persons for colleagues in other medical and surgical specialties. Some general surgeons work in tertiary care centres in cities and focus their activities on one or more very specific areas. Others cover the whole range of surgical needs, for example in outlying centres where they are the only surgeon available.
