Pathology

Pathology is the medical specialty that diagnoses and determines an action plan based on the microscopic examination of human tissue obtained through biopsy, excision or some other means. This specialty gives an overall view of diseases. A pathologist screens for cancer by means of cytology (e.g., screening for cervical cancer using a PAP test), performs autopsies (to learn the cause of death), screens for hereditary disease (through the use of prenatal testing, in particular), and even analyzes the efficacy of certain medical and/or surgical methods of treatment. Pathologists are mainly located in hospitals.

They play an important role in hospital life, because the patient’s treatment will be based on their diagnosis. They are often consulted, even during surgery, to provide guidance on treatment of a cancerous tumour (whether it is benign or malignant). Pathologists in university hospitals are responsible for teaching about diseases, their causes and consequences.
