Academic Background

Medical specialists have more than five years of postdoctoral specialization studies in their particular field of expertise (medical and surgical specialties).

Depending on their choices or specialization profile, medical specialists may also further their specialization in their selected field (a fellowship, etc.), or add a second different medical specialty (e.g. pediatric cardiac surgery). A physician’s education, from primary school to a fellowship, therefore takes 21 to 25 years.
