Suivi médical et déficience intellectuelle
(Medical Follow-up and Intellectual Disability)
Individuals living with an intellectual handicap often present with more physical and mental health problems than the general population. Because of their difficulty communicating and understanding, it is often more difficult to diagnose their health problems. The aim of this text, written by three physicians including psychiatrist Robert Labine, is to provide physicians and other health professionals with information on the type of medical practice to adopt with regard to the specific characteristics of such individuals and to draw up guidelines for the promotion of good health and the prevention of medical problems.

Des réseaux responsables de leur population
Dr. Denis A. Roy, a public health medical specialist and Vice President for Scientific Affairs at the Institut national de la santé publique du Québec; Dr. Éric Litvak, a public health medical specialist and medical consultant for the Agence de la santé et des services sociaux de la Montérégie, and Dr. Fred Paccaud, a colleague from Belgium, have published Des réseaux responsables de leur population; moderniser la gestion et la gouvernance en santé (Networks responsible for their population: modernizing management and governance in the health sector).

L’histoire de la dermatologie québécoise révélée
Historian Denis Goulet, in collaboration with Dr. Christian Allen Drouin, has just published Histoire de la dermatologie et de la syphiligraphie au Québec (The History of Quebec Dermatology and Syphilography), with Éditions Carte blanche. This text traces the emergence of dermatology and syphilography in Quebec, together with the scientific and professional developments in these fields. The major actors in this medical science are presented, those who played a primary role in establishing and developing this specialty in hospitals, as well as their efforts to ensure the introduction of preventive measures in the fight against syphilis and, more recently, skin cancer. The book also covers the 60-year history of the Association des dermatologues du Québec.
La dégénérescence maculaire liée à l’âge
Approximately 300,000 Quebecers aged 55 or more suffer from age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) and this number may triple over the next 25 years because of population aging. Dr. Jean-Daniel Arbour and Dr. Pierre Labelle, both from to the Department of Ophthalmology, Université de Montréal, along with two colleagues in France, have published DMLA - La dégénérescence maculaire liée à l’âge (Age-Related Macular Degeneration) (Annika Parance Éditeur), which discusses the causes, consequences and treatments of ARMD. This information and prevention guide seeks to generate a better understanding of this disease among the people affected and those close to them. The text is also a valuable guide for individuals recently diagnosed with ARMD, their families and friends.
Pédiatrie et obésité
Obesity, an extremely complexe phenomenom in itself, is growing out of proportions. Dr. Fernando Alvarez, a paediatrician at CHU Sainte-Justine, along with two colleagues, published Pédiatrie et obésité : un conflit entre nature et culture. This textbook covers subjects surrounding obesity in childhood and its consequences, an epidemiologic portrait of child obesity, the consequences of the food revolution on individual and populations’ health and problems existing in therapeutic and in a social perspective.

Retarded development can be prevented!
Many causes of handicaps and retarded development have been identified over the past few decades, mainly on the scientific front. Whether we are practitioners, professionals or parents, we need to obtain all the data available so that we can make informed decisions, taking all clinical, ethical and social factors and issues into account. “Handicaps et retards de développement”, published by Béliveau Éditeur, is the work of a multidisciplinary team from France and Quebec (a geneticist, child psychiatrist, psychologist, neonatologist and others). Its purpose is to disseminate information on the probable causes of handicaps or retarded development in children and inform medical personnel and parents of preventive measures that can be taken before, during and after the birth of the child.
Question de maigrir
La vérité sur l’obésité… pandémie du siècle
Many people want to lose weight. Unfortunately, they are often led astray by miracle diets. The health consequences of obesity have been known since ancient times, and it has now taken on pandemic proportions. The result is chronic diseases that are costly for health care systems. This patient guidebook depicts the information available on weight loss and on the consequences of obesity. It sheds light on the successes and failures of various methods of weight loss.
The author, Dr. Dominique Garrel, is an expert on the subject. An endocrinologist, full professor and Director of the Nutrition Department at the Université de Montréal Faculty of Medicine, as well as a researcher at Centre hospitalier universitaire de Montréal (CHUM), he has authored several scientific articles and books on nutrition. According to Dr. Garrel, “at society’s level, the task is immense. We must get rid of the prejudice suffered by patients with a visible disease such as obesity. We must change our bad habits: a sedentary lifestyle, high-calorie foods with little nutritional value constantly available at low cost, and permanent stress. The development of bariatric surgery has proven how beneficial weight loss can be.”

Vivre avec un proche cardiaque
Dr. Serge Doucet, a cardiologist at the Montreal Heart Institute, full professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Université de Montréal, and holder of the Groseillers-Bérard Chair in interventional cardiology, has recently written Vivre avec un proche cardiaque (Living with a Heart Patient). Practical Guide to Internal Medicine
Professor Luc Lanthier of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Sherbrooke, has launched “Practical Guide to Internal Medicine”, the first English edition of Guide pratique de médecine interne of which there are five editions in French.
The book is intended for medical students, residents and general practitioners in Quebec and has had phenomenal success with more than 12,500 copies being sold. Professor Lanthier worked on the book from the time of his residency in internal medicine until he published it in 1999 at the start of his medical career. It is a condensed compilation of the most common problems found in the practice of this specialty, and he reviews vast amounts of knowledge and data. Designed to be practical, the Guide easily slips into a doctor coat pocket.
Distress Felt by Caregivers
As a result of the October 2008 symposium on the Suffering of Caregivers: Express or Repress? (La souffrance des soignants : exprimer ou réprimer ?) organized by the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC), this work reflects the presentations made at that time and is intended to shed new light on a very real situation experienced by health and social services caregivers (physicians, nurses, social workers, etc.). Caregivers feel guilt over the fact that it is impossible for them to achieve the therapeutic ideal with regard to all the actions and practices intended to cure, heal and relieve. Conscious of their inability, caregivers may resign and become ill themselves. Now unable to give care, such individuals must change their role and, in their turn, become care receivers.
Stress, estime de soi, santé, travail
Fifty years after Dr. Hans Selye was responsible for the word “stress” being added to dictionaries, we are barely beginning to fully grasp and comprehend his influence on both public and private health. Dr. André Arsenault (nuclear medicine) and his colleague, psychologist Simon L. Dolan, have published a book (Presses de l’Université du Québec) to demonstrate that reduced stress at work can be profitable for employers. The authors state that professional stress is tied to three factors: perception of the job requirements, individual differences, and social support. The book puts forward suggestions to reduce and even avoid stress.

COPD
Drs. François Maltais and Roger Belleau, respirologists at Hôpital Laval, have published Apprendre à vivre avec la bronchite chronique ou l’emphysème, in collaboration with Les Presses de l’Université Laval.
According to Dr. Maltais, “chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which covers both chronic bronchitis and emphysema, imposes an incredible health burden on Quebec, the rest of Canada and, indeed, the world. The disease affects 750,000 Canadians and is the fourth leading cause of death today. Its consequences are expected to increase significantly over the next few years. From an economic point of view, COPD-related health costs are estimated at approximately $3 billion per year in Canada. In addition to its impact on society and our health systems, COPD affects the quality of life of those suffering from it. It causes shortness of breath upon exertion; this gradually increases and ultimately affects their normal daily activities”.
The manual contains information about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and the medication necessary to treat it. There is an exercise program and a great deal of advice on how to make daily life easier for those affected by it.
