Couillard Reappointed Minister of Health
The Federation of medical specialists looks to an improved relationship
Montreal, April 18, 2007 – Mr. Philippe Couillard’s reappointment as Minister of Health and Social Services is an indication
that the Government of Quebec will continue to handle ongoing issues in the same manner as before.
The Federation of
Medical Specialists of Quebec (the FMSQ) hopes that this will also lead to a positive outcome regarding the agreement
reached in December 2006, which included the repeal of the special legislation in force at that time.
The FMSQ believes that Mr. Couillard, himself a medical specialist, can further the reforms relating to the resources and
needs of Quebecers by targeting health care activities and priorities. “Medical specialists can provide concrete solutions to
known, long-lasting problems that are, in fact, becoming even more pressing,” stated Dr. Gaétan Barrette, President of the
FMSQ. “The challenges faced by our health system require that we work together in an open-minded manner if we really
want to provide Quebecers with improved access to proper care”.
The FMSQ considers that a positive, continuing relationship between the Government of Quebec and medical specialists is
imperative for an improved health care system. “The government must opt for a climate of openness and respect. We urge
Mr. Couillard to set the tone, and he can rely on the Federation to act in a likely manner on issues that concerns us both,”
added Dr. Barrette.
The Federation of Medical Specialists of Quebec numbers nearly 8,000 members in 35 specialties. It is the sole organization
