Dr. Gaétan Barrette re-elected as President of the FMSQ

Montreal, Monday April 2, 2007 — The Federation of Medical Specialists of Quebec (FMSQ) Delegates’ Assembly has elected, on Thursday March 29th, the members of its Board of directors for a two-year mandate (2007-2009).

Doctor Gaétan Barrette has been re-elected as President without opposition. Doctor Barrette is radiologist at the Rosemont-Maisonneuve Hospital in Montreal. Dr. Barrette has been elected for the first time in November 2006, in replacement of Doctor Yves Dugré who left for health reasons.

The President will be supported by Vice-president Doctor Michel Lallier, a general surgeon at the UHC Sainte-Justine of Montreal, by Doctor Daniel Doyle, secretary, a cardiovascular surgeon at Hôpital Laval, and by Doctor Maurice Boudreault, treasurer, a psychiatrist at the Pedopsychiatry Center of the CHUQ.

The other members elected at the Board of directors are : Dr. Josée Parent, gastroenterologist at the Montreal General Hospital; Dr. Bernard Bissonnette, rheumatologist at Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur; Dr. François Delisle, neurologist at the Centre hospitalier régional de Rimouski and remote regions representative; Dr. Pierre Gaudreault, pediatrician at the UHC Sainte-Justine, and Dr. Raymond Hould, orthopedic surgeon at the Hôtel-Dieu of Arthabaska and intermediate regions representative.

Among the priorities of the Federation, stand out the important file of the interprovincial equality of compensation for medical specialists and the business relation, subjects in the heart of the mediation between the government and the FMSQ since the beginning of the year 2007.

The practice conditions of the medical specialists represent a major issue that Dr. Barrette wants to work on in priority during his mandate. Moreover, the Federation wants to show up the importance of setting adequate medical effectives in the hospitals to ensure to the Quebec population a better accessibility to health cares, in regions as in urban areas.

The Federation of Medical Specialists of Quebec numbers nearly 8,000 members, representing 35 specialties.

The sole agency recognized by government to negotiate collective agreements on behalf of medical specialists, the FMSQ is also consulted on every aspect of the organization of medical care in Quebec.
