Enough is enough: FMSQ demands mediation

Montreal, May 30, 2006 – At the Olympic Stadium tonight, the Federation of Medical Specialists of Québec (FMSQ) met its members. Following the presentation of the latest government offer, the 2,700 FMSQ members in attendance, either on site at the Stadium or through videoconference links to various cities, unanimously applauded the decision to call for mediation.

In fact, the agreement letter - Lettre d’entente no 146 - signed with the government in April 2003, provides for such a recourse where parties involved may call for mediation in order to reach an agreement.

“We would have preferred that the government negotiate in good faith with us. The government signed a formal agreement in which it recognizes the remuneration disparity and commits to close the gap. And all of a sudden, the government reneges its commitments. Our members have replied: Enough is enough!”, explains FMSQ President Dr. Yves Dugré.

2,376 medical specialists had gathered at the Olympic Stadium while 285 other were participating live through videoconference links to remote areas. Shocked by the government proposal, they felt betrayed.

The Federation of Medical Specialists numbers more than 8,000 members in Quebec, representing 35 associations.

The sole agency recognized by government to negotiate collective agreements on behalf of medical specialists, the FMSQ is also consulted on every aspect of the organization of medical care in Quebec.
